#23 FMF How To Focus On What You Can Affect And Effect

The ChaosCast: Leadership Lessons From Chaos. Entrepreneur and former Navy SEAL, Jeff Boss explores the behaviors and mindsets that enable people and teams to find clarity amidst chaos and forge greatness.

In episode #21, Jeff talked about entering the “unknown” world of entrepreneurship or whatever your endeavor is.

With that, comes a lot of overwhelm, a lot of what I call BSBS, which is an acronym for a technical term called the bright shiny ball syndrome.

It’s easy to chase new, bright shiny balls.

It’s easy to do what feels right because, well, easy always feels good.

It’s easy to go with what offers immediate gratification and immediate feedback

But these aren’t always the right things to DO.

It’s easy to be busy. It’s not so easy to be productive.

In this Five Minute Friday episode, Jeff shares two questions that he asks himself to stay focused and get sh*t done amidst entrepreneurial overwhelm.

We talked in #21 about entering the "unknown" world of entrepreneurship or whatever your endeavor is.

With that, comes a lot of overwhelm, a lot of what I call BSBS, which is an acronym for a technical term called the bright shiny ball syndrome.

It's easy to chase new, bright shiny balls.

It's easy to do what feels right because, well, easy always feels good.

It's easy to go with what offers immediate gratification and immediate feedback.

But these aren't always the right things to DO.

It's easy to be busy; it's not so easy to be productive.

And I'm no different. As an entrepreneur I find myself wearing multiple hats at once--as does my business partner--but the key for us both and to optimize our output, is to focus on what we can affect and effect--influence and directly manage.

I found myself this week chasing a lot of different shiny balls--don't take that out of context.

And when this happened I thought about episode #21 and the concept of doing vs. being.

Am I being busy or am I being productive? And am I doing things right and doing the right things to be what I need to be?--which is productive.

Those two questions helped me stay on track because, for all you entrepreneurs out there, you get it.

You get that you could fill up your day doing mindless shit and never actually get ahead. Your skill and will to focus poses a direct threat to your startup's survival.

You need to be able to focus, yes,

BUT, you need to be able--and willing--to focus on doing things right, and doing the right things.

This requires navigating the sea of information overload which is actually a skill--there is such a thing as information literacy.

Just as reading a book demands its own literacy, withering the storm of information to find the needle in the haystack requires its own literacy, too.

Anyway, if you're an entrepreneur, you get this.

And if you are, let me know! Leave a comment on our site thechaoscast.com or on facebook.com/thechaoscast and let us know how you navigate YOUR entrepreneurial chaos.

And of course if you have questions, comments, suggestions, you can find us there, too.

That's all I got for today's FMF, see you next episode.
